Basil Cheese Breadsticks
So, when I’m on a vacation or traveling I look out for options that I could pre-make and carry along to munch whenever hungry. Therefore, this is one recipe that’s always on my checklist. It’s not messy to carry along and also stays well for a long time. Thus, cheese makes these simple breadsticks taste so good and the flavor of the basil is what makes these breadsticks different.
Cheese Breadsticks Recipe
Note, this recipe is easy to follow but quite a process. However, this process is simply worth it. Thus, it yields freshly home-baked breadsticks that cannot be compared to the ready-made ones
LETS TALK INGREDIENTS
Cheese
So, cheese is an essential ingredient to make these breadsticks different from the regular ones. You can use any grated cheese. However, I used parmesan to make these, but have also used mozzarella and cheddar in the past and they all taste great. But, the best according to me is parmesan. If it’s easily available to you, buy it now !!
Next, grate the cheese fine using a grater
Basil
So, the sweet aroma that fresh basil has is gorgeous. Next, chop fresh basil really fine and add it to the bread dough. Also, leave some to sprinkle over the top before baking. In case you do not find fresh basil you can also use dried basil. However, I’m sure you know the difference in flavor while making these sticks
Basil Cheese Bread Sticks Recipe – Crispy Breadsticks
Ingredients
200 grams all purpose flour
4 grams instant yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
120 ml warm water
60 grams salted butter, room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
3-4 tablespoons fresh basil, finely chopped
Brushing on the top before baking:
1 tablespoon Milk
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon fresh basil, finely chopped
2 tablespoons melted butter
Instructions – Easy Bread Sticks Recipe
In a small bowl, add the sugar and instant yeast along with warm water. Stir and set aside for 10 mins or until the mixture becomes frothy
In a blender add the flour, garlic powder and butter together and mix well. The mixture should be crumbly. You can even do this by hand without the blender.
Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and combine well. Initially, the dough will be a bit sticky. Knead it for 6-8 mins by hand or in a blender. You will notice that the dough becomes less sticky and smooth. Keep this dough in a bowl greased with oil. Cling wrap the bowl and let it ferment for 1 1/2 -2 hours. The dough should rise during the fermenting process
Once done, remove the cling wrap and punch the dough back. At this stage add the grated cheese and finely chopped basil. Mix well with the dough
Take small portions of the dough (I took dough balls that weighed 20 – 22 grams each) and roll into long breadsticks. Place these breadsticks on a baking tray lined with parchment paper making sure you keep a minimum gap of 3 inches between each. Let this ferment for another 40 mins or until it rises a bit
Brush on some milk onto each breadstick and sprinkle garlic powder and fresh basil onto each. Bake in a preheated oven at 190 degrees C for 20 to 25 mins or until they turn golden brown
Once out of the oven brush some melted butter onto each of these and serve
