Easy Homemade Chocolate With Cocoa Butter
I’ve been a dark chocolate lover for a long time and always wondered if it’s possible to make chocolate at home from scratch. In India, when I asked someone if they make chocolates at home. The answer was yes and the method was chocolates made by melting readymade chocolate itself. So this made me more curious to find out if I could make chocolate bars without following the method the others did.
Also, this chocolate bar recipe is easy and quick. Moreover, its just mixing ingredients in a bowl. Next, all you need to do is refrigerate it in chocolate molds. I’ve shared a very basic dark chocolate recipe, however, you can add whatever further ingredients you want and make it exotic. My personal favorite is adding mixed roasted nuts to it and then set it to form chocolate bars.
LETS TALK INGREDIENTS (how to make homemade chocolate bars)
Cocoa Butter
Firstly, one of the essential ingredients in the making of chocolate is cocoa butter. Also, this is what makes chocolate, CHOCOLATE. You get cocoa butter in many forms, use what is available to you. However, in India, I get cocoa butter in bars. It is off-white in color, solid and tasteless. This ingredient cannot be substituted or skipped if you want to get the right texture and chocolate feel
Honey
Now, cocoa powder is bitter. Thus, to balance flavors we need to add a sweetening agent. As a result, in this recipe its honey that plays this role. You can also substitute honey with maple syrup. Adjust the quantity of honey according to how sweet you want the chocolate to be
Cocoa powder – how to make chocolate easy way
I like the dark rich flavor of the unsweetened dutch processed cocoa powder. It gives the bar a rich taste and a dark color. You can also use natural cocoa powder if you find this better
Coconut Oil
Chocolate and water are two extreme ingredients. When making chocolate, oil is what is commonly used since water cannot be used in any way. Coconut oil is the best to use. Feel free to use any type of oil, it could even be canola oil. My preference is coconut oil as it leaves a nutty taste with a lovely texture and gloss to the chocolate. Make sure to use pure coconut oil.
Dark Chocolate Bars Recipe
Ingredients
1 tablespoon Coconut Oil
110 grams cocoa butter, roughly chopped
4 tablespoons honey (adjust the quantity according to sweetness required)
40 grams unsweetened Dutch-processed cocoa powder
dash of salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Combine cocoa butter and coconut oil in a bowl. Place this on a double boiler and melt completely. Keep stirring the mixture occasionally until melted
Once melted, remove the bowl from the double boiler and sieve the cocoa powder into this liquid mixture. Whisk well till no lumps
Add honey and mix well. Add the vanilla essence and salt as well
The mixture should be glossy with no lumps
Pour this mixture into molds of your choice. I like to use bar-shaped molds.
Let this set in the fridge for about an hour or two.
Once set the chocolate should come out easily from the mold
Notes
Store the chocolate in the fridge if not consumed immediately
Do not keep out for long in extremely humid weather as it would sweat
The chocolate remains in shape and does not melt when brought to room temperature
Adjust ingredients according to your preference. You may even skip the use of vanilla essence and salt if you’d like to or even reduce or increase the quantity of honey added

Hello, I have made your dark chocolate bars a couple of times and they’re very delicious! The only problem I have is, when I make the chocolate it is very thin and runny. I added less coconut oil and added cornstarch to make it thicker, but it was still very thin. I don’t think it melts at room temperature any more, as it used to. When I melt them again, it returns to its very runny state. I like the thickness that chocolate chips and bars have, they’re very solid. I would like my chocolate to be solid at room temperature too, so I don’t have to store it in the fridge all the time. For some reason my chocolate always comes out very soft, and not hard at all. Should I use powdered sugar instead of honey? What would you recommend? Thank you for your time.
Hi Jane..
Glad you found this tasty
This is pure chocolate and thus melts when at room temperature
People do add powdered sugar for a thicker version but I’m not sure if that would help to make it less runny ..
Cocoa butter is the reason for its liquidy texture but this is how it is .. This chocolate recipe is not like the store brought tempered one’s, these are just meant to consume as dessert and thus we do not focus on the solid texture, as we want it to be soft and silky
Hi Alisha, this chocolate isn’t tempered so do you need to keep it stored in the refrigerator at all times?
Hi Shruti .. Yes !! This one needs to be kept in the fridge all the time
Hello Alisha,
Can I substitute the cocoa butter with regular butter?
Hi Olympia.. This recipe cannot be made with regular butter. You need cocoa butter in particular. It’s what makes chocolate, CHOCOLATE !!
