What is Apple Crisp ?
Apple Crisp is a dessert made with a streusel topping. This dessert is also known as Apple Crumble or Cobbler
It is made by slicing apples and coating them with sugar and a hint of spices like cinnamon or nutmeg. The fruit is then topped with a streusel-like topping made with flour, brown sugar, oats and crumbled with butter for a crisp and lumpy texture on the top of the apples
Once baked the apples get soft and juicy and the crust over it remains crisp, that’s what’s called an Apple Crisp

What is the difference between apple crisp and apple crumble?
Just like an apple crisp, apple crumble is also a baked fruit dessert that contains fruits at the base and then topped with a crumbly mixture. The only difference is that an apple crisp contains oats and nuts too. An Apple crumble is just like a simple streusel mixture that is flour, sugar and butter. Therefore, apple crisp and crumble are similar but not the same
Ingredients to make apple crisp
When it’s the apple season and you have crunchy tart sweet apples, apple crisp is what you need to make. Any kind of apples can be used – Granny smith apples, Golden apples, honeycrisp apples, etc
Apples and cinnamon are a match made in heaven. A little bit goes a long way. So do not add too much of this spice. We need the apple crisp to have a hint of cinnamon so be careful with the quantity you add to it. Instead of cinnamon you may even add nutmeg
Lemon juice & lemon zest
Zest, is the grated outer skin of the lime. This ingredient adds flavor to the dish. Lemon juice helps to prevent the oxidation process that makes the apples brown. It also balances the sweet and tarty taste in the apple crisp
This recipe has both, castor sugar (white) and brown sugar. Adding brown sugar gives the crisp a nice caramel-like feel
Rolled Oats are the best type of oats to use for this recipe. Instant oats give the apple crisp a mushy texture which is not very pleasant. Steel-cut oats take a long time to cool. The best is rolled oats which is easily available and the best for baked recipes
All purpose flour is used to make the crumbly topping
Salted cold butter, is an essential ingredient for the crumbly mixture. Use cold butter for a better crumbly mixture. Room temperature butter can also be used
We add a little bit of cornflour to the apples before baking. This ensures that the juices thicken once the apples are baked giving the crisp a thick apple sauce-like texture
Apple crisp is said to taste best when served hot with a scoop of icecream. A simple vanilla icecream is best !!
How to make apple crisp
In a bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice, lemon zest, cinnamon, cornflour and sugar
In another bowl, toss the all purpose flour, sugar, rolled oats and mix well. Add the butter & vanilla essence. Form a crumbly mixture
Take a baking dish and add the apples to it. Spread evenly, and top it up with the flour mixture. Bake at 180 degrees C for 45 mins or until golden brown. Serve super hot with scoops of vanilla icecream
Best Apple Crisp Recipe
For the apples
- 3 big apples, sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tsp lemon zest
- 2 tsps cornflour
- 2 tbsps castor sugar
- 2 tbsps brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder
For the topping
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 cup rolled oats
- ¾ cup salted butter, cold a cut into cubes
- ½ teaspoon vanilla essence
For the apples
- In a bowl, add the sliced apples, lemon juice, lemon zest, castor sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon powder and corn flour. Mix well and set aside
For the topping
- In a another bowl, add the all purpose flour, brown sugar, rolled oats and mix well. Add the butter and crumble it with your fingers along with the other ingredients. Add the vanilla essence and continue. This mixture should be crumbly in texture
Assemble the apple crisp
- Take a 7 inch square baking dish, place the apple mixture in it and top it up with the prepared crumble mixture. Bake this in a preheated oven at 180 degrees C for 40 to 45 mins or until the top is golden brown and crisp
- Let the pie sit at room temperature for 10 minutes. Next, serve it with scoops of vanilla icecream
