Ingredients to make homemade jam
Fruit
Fresh fruit or canned or frozen fruit can be used. Here, we’re using fresh plums that are ripe and soft. Feel free to use canned or frozen plums too. Instead of plum, you may even use peaches, cherries, strawberries, etc. Ripe & soft plums are always sweeter and the best to make homemade jam
Sugar
Sugar is what yields the right jelly like texture and adds sweetness to this jam. Works as a natural preservative and also helps achieve the right consistency
Cinnamon
Not a compulsion, but no skipping it. A stick of cinnamon adds the right amount of flavor to this jam. Its like a mild spiced fragrance to the sweet & sourish jam
How to make Plum Jam ?
Roughly chop ripe fresh plums or canned plums
Combine with sugar and a stick of cinnamon
Bring this mixture to a boil until slightly sticky and a little thick. You should be able to see the bottom of the pan while moving the mixture
Switch off the gas and store the jam in a container. Use as required

How to make Jam without pectin – Plum Jam Recipe
Some fruits contain natural pectin that’s present in there and some fruits have low pectin in them
Plums are considered to have moderate to high pectin in them, and thus we are able to make this jam without adding any additional pectin
If your making a jam with a fruit that has low pectin in them, you may need to add pectin powder to get that jam like texture or look out for other ways to help achieve the right jelly like consistency
Sugar is another essential ingredient which helps us achieve a good jam like consistency
Ingredients
- 500 grams fresh ripe plums, chopped (1/2 kg) you may use canned plums too
- 200 grams sugar (1 cup)
- 2 inch cinnamon stick
Instructions
- Combine the ripe roughly chopped plums with sugar and the cinnamon stick. Mix well and set the pan on medium heat. Let the sugar melt completely
- Once the sugar has melted, increase the heat and let the mixture come to a boil. Mash the plums a little while mixing during the cooking process
- Continue boiling the mixture for about 5 to 10 minutes or until the bottom of the pan is slightly visible while moving the jam with a spoon or spatula. The jam will be slightly thicker and darker in color
- Switch off the gas, pour this mixture in an airtight jar or glass bottle. The mixture will get thicker after a few hours. Apply the jam onto a slice of bread and enjoy !!
